British Museum Top 20 13 Seated Buddha  [20 of 30]

13. Seated Buddha – Eastern India (possibly Sarnath), 5CAD, 1.18m high. This sandstone statue of Shakyamuni is notable for its posture, since it is more common to see him seated with legs crossed. Here he sits on a lion's throne with his feet on a double lotus. His hands are in the teaching mudra, delivering his first teaching in the Deer Park at Sarnath.
